List of Prime Ministers of India

The following are the details from the first prime minister of India to the current prime minister of India.

1. PANDIT JAWAHARLAL NEHRU (1889-1964)

Jawaharlal Nehru had been the First Prime Minister of India, from 15th August 1947 to 27th May 1964, continuously for a total duration of  16 years, 9 months and 12 days consecutively and he is the first and the only person to have held the post for the longest / continuous duration for 3 Full Terms & part of the 4th Term.

Jawaharlal Nehru died on 27th May 1964, at the age of 74 years, in New Delhi during his tenure as Prime Minister of India. In 1955 he was conferred on with the Bharat Ratna Award, the first highest Civilian Award of India. As he had been very fond of children and was called ‘Chacha Nehru’ (Nehru Uncle), his birthday, the 14th November is being celebrated as the ‘Children’s Day’ in India, from 1964 after his death.

GULZARILAL NANDA

Gulzarilal Nanda was the First Interim Prime Minister of India, from 27th May 1964 to 9th June 1964, for 14 days, after the death of Jawaharlal Nehru until Dr. Lal Bahadur Shastri took over as the Second Prime Minister of India. He  was also the Second Interim Prime Minister of India, from 11th January 1966 to 24th January 1966, for 14 days,  after the death of Dr.Lal Bahadur Shastri in Tashkent Russia / USSR on 11th January 1966, during his tenure as Prime Minister, until Mrs. Indira Gandhi took over as the Third Prime Minister of India.

2. LAL BAHADUR SHASTRI

Lal Bahadur Shastri was the Second Prime Minister of India from 9th June 1964 to 11th January 1966, for the duration of 1 year, 7 months and 2 days, until his death.

In 1966, Lal Bahadur Shastri was posthumously awarded India’s first highest Civilian Award the: ‘Bharat Ratna’.

3. MRS. INDIRA GANDHI

Indira Gandhi was the Third Prime Minister of India, in the following 2 phases:

  • From 24th January 1966 to 24th March 1977, for a period of 10 years and 2 months, succeeding Dr.Lal Bahadur Shastri and
  • From 14th January 1980 to 31st October 1984, for a period of 4 years, 9 months and 17 days, succeeding Dr.Charan Singh until her death on 31st October 1984, being shot down by her own Security Guards, during her tenure as the Prime Minister of India.

She was the Second longest serving Prime Minister of India. Also, Mrs. Indira Gandhi is the first and the only ‘Women Prime Minister of India’

In 1971, she was posthumously conferred on with India’s first highest civilian award the ‘Bharat Ratna’

4. MR.MORARJI DESAI

Morarji Desai was the Fourth Prime Minister of India, from 24th March 1977 to 28th July 1979, for 2 years and 4 months. He was the of First Non-Congress Prime Minister India.

Morarji Desai was conferred on with Nishan-e-Pakistan’, Pakistan’s highest Civilian Award in 1990 (he was the only one Indian to be conferred on with ‘Nishan-e-Pakistan’) and the ‘Bharat Ratna’, India’s ,the first highest Civilian Award in 1991, despite the fact that Desai stopped the ‘Bharat Ratna Award’ during his tenure as the Prime Minister of India, between 1977 and 1980, as he opined that the awards were the products of the Thinking & the Legacy of the British.

5. Mr.CHARAN SINGH

Chaudhary Charan Singh was the Fifth Prime Minister of India from 28th July 1979 to 14th January 1980 for 5 months and 15 days.

After the resignation of Morarji Desai, he became the Fifth Prime Minister of India in July 1979 from the Janata Party (Secular). He resigned as the Prime Minister of India in January 1980, subsequent to the withdrawal of support by the Indira Gandhi Congress party. After resignation, he had been the Leader of the Lok Dal Party till his death. He died on 29th May 1987 at the age of 84 years at New Delhi.

MRS. INDIRA GANDHI (Second Time): After the resignation of Charan Singh, Mrs. Indira Gandhi was the Prime Minister of India from 14th January 1980 to 31st October 1984, for the second time. She was assassinated on 31st October 1984,  by her own Security Guards in her official residence.

6. Mr.RAJIV GANDHI

Rajiv Gandhi was the Sixth Prime Minister of India, from 31st October 1984 to 1st December 1989 for a duration of 5 years and 1 month.

Many Government Projects, Schemes, Stadiums, Airports, Educational Institutes, Universities, and  Technology Centres were named after him. He was conferred on with India’s highest civilian award, the Bharat Ratna, posthumously in 1991.

7. Mr.V.P.SINGH

V.P.Singh had been the Seventh Prime Minister of India, from 2nd December 1989 to  10th November 1990,  for 11 months.

He was born in Allahabad on 25th June 1931 and died on 27th November 2008 at the age of 77.

He was the head of the Janata Dal Government.

Mr.V.P.Singh succeeded Mr.Rajiv Gandhi and was succeeded by Mr.Chandra Shekar as the Prime Minister of India.

8. MR.CHANDRA SHEKAR

Chandra Shekar was the Eighth Prime Minister of India, from 10th November 1990 to 21st June 1991,  for 7 months. He was born in Ibrahimpatti village in Ballia District in Uttar Pradesh on 1st July 1927 and died in New Delhi on 8th July 2007 at the age of 80 years.

He succeeded Mr.V.P.Singh and was succeeded by Mr.P.V.Narasimha Rao as the Prime Minister of India.

9. MR.P.V.NARASIMHA RAO

P.V.Narasimha Rao was the Ninth Prime Minister of India, from 21st June 1991 to 16th May 1996,  for 4 years and 11 months.

Mr.P.V.Narasimha Rao is the first South Indian / the first from the State of Andhra Pradesh to become the Prime Minister of India.

He succeeded Mr.Chandra Shekar and was succeeded by Mr.A.B.Vajpayee as the Prime Minister of India.

10. MR. ATAL BIHARI VAJPAYEE / A.B.VAJPAYEE

A.B.Vajpaye was the 10th Prime Minister of India, in the following 3 terms:

Term 1: From 16th May 1996 To  1st June 1996 for 17 days as the Prime Minister of the Bharatiya Janata Party /BJP  and a

Term 2: From 19th March 1998 to 13th October 1999  for a period of  1 year, 6 months and 24 days as the Prime Minister of a BJP led National Democratic Alliance /NDA   and a

Term 3: From 13th October 1999 to 22nd May 2004 for a period of 4 years 7 months and 9 days as the Prime Minister of the Bharathiya Janatha Party/ BJP led National Democratic Alliance/NDA.

Mr.A.B.Vajpayee had been the Prime Minister of India as the only Non -Congress Prime Minister who had completed a full 5 years term and he had been the Prime Minister of India for a  total period of 6 years 2 months and 20 days (Non Consecutively)

Mr.A.B.Vajpayee was conferred on with the highest civilian award of India, the Bharat Ratna in the year 2015.

11. MR.H.D.DEVE GOWDA

H.D.Dev Gowda was the Eleventh Prime Minister of India from 1st June 1996 To 21st April 1997.for a period of 10 months and 20 days. He was born on 18th May 1933 at  Haradanahalli village in  Holenarasipura taluk of, Hassan District of  Karnataka. He is 84 years old as of  18th May 2017.

Deve Gowda was the Prime Minister heading a ‘non-congress’ and non-BJP’ collision -“United Front”.

12. DR. INDER KUMAR GUJRAL / Dr.I.K.GUJRAL

Dr.I.K Gujral was the 12th Prime Minister of India from 21st April 1997 To 19th March 1998 for 11 months. he was born on 4th December 1919, in Jhelum, Undivided Punjab, which is presently in Pakistan. He died in Gurgaon, Haryana on 30th November 2012 at the age of 92 years as the Prime Minister of the Janata Dal Government.

From 19th March 1998 To 22nd May 2004:

MR. ATAL BIHARI VAJPAYEE / A.B VAJPAYEE 

Vajpayee was the Prime Minister of India for the second and the third time, From 19th March 1998 To 13th October 1999 and From 13th October 1999 To 22nd May 2004.

13. DR. MANMOHAN SINGH

Manmohan Singh was the 14th Prime Minister of India, from 22nd May 2004 to 26th May 2014, for two complete & consecutive terms for 10 years.

He was the Prime Minister of the Indian National Congress/ INC-led United Progressive Alliance/ UPA. (Born in  Gah, Punjab on 26th September 1932-aged 83 years as on 26th September 2015)

Dr.Manmohan Singh had been the 13th &the 14th  Prime Minister of India from 22nd May 2004 till 26th May 2014, for a continuous and full 2 terms of 10 years as the Prime Minister of the Indian National Congress/ INC-led United Progressive Alliance/ UPA.

14. MR.NARENDRA MODI

Narendra Modi is elected as the 14th and 15th(present) Prime Minister of India, from 26th May 2014 till date.

Term 1:  Mr.Narendra Modi has taken charge as the Prime Minister of India from 26th May 2014 till 30th May 2019, as the Prime Minister of the Bharatiya Janata Party/BJP led National Democratic Alliance/ NDA.

Term 2:  Modi led NDA alliance for a big victory in 2019 general election and has taken charge as the Prime Minister of India again from 30th May 2019.

Mr.Narendr Modi had been the Chief Minister of Gujarat from  2001 to 2014.
