List of Contestants and Votes Received in the Presidential Elections in India From 1952

The First Presidential Elections in India was held in 1952.  5 persons contested and Dr.Rajendra Prasad won and Became the First President of India.

( It is notable that Dr.Rajendra Prasad took office as the First President of India on 26th January 1950, the day on which India became Republic. However, the first Presidential Election was held in the year 1952. Dr.Rajendra Prasad contested the First Presidential Election and won and took office as the first elected President of  India on 13th May 1952).

The Third Presidential Election was conducted in 1962. 3 Persons contested and Dr.S.Radhakrishnan won and became the President of India. The following are the number of voted received by the 3 contestants:

The Sixth Presidential Election was conducted in 1974.  2 persons contested and Fakhrudddin Ali Ahmend    won and became the President of India. The following are the number of voted received by the 2  contestants:

  • Tridib Chaudhuri –Independent-    189,196

The Seventh Presidential Election was conducted in 1977. 37 candidates filed their nominations, 36 of them were rejected, and  Neelam Sanjiva Reddy  was elected as the President  winning unopposed.

The Eighth  Presidential Election was conducted in 1982.  2 persons contested and Zail Singh won and became the President of India. The following are the number of voted received by the 2 contestants:

The ninth Presidential Election was conducted in 1987.  3 persons contested and R. Venkataraman   won and became the President of India. The following are the number of voted received by the  3 contestants:

  • Mithilesh Kumar –Independent-    2,223

The Tenth   Presidential Election was conducted in 1992.  3 persons contested and Shankar Dayal Sharma   won and became the President of India. The following are the number of voted received by the 3 contestants:

The Eleventh Presidential Election was conducted in 1997.  3 persons contested and K.R.Narayanan   won and became the President of India. The following are the number of voted received by the 3 contestants:

  • T.N. Seshan-Independent – 50,631
  • Kaka Joginder Singh a.k.a. Dharti-Pakad- Independent-1,135

The Twelfth   Presidential Election was conducted in 2002. 2 persons contested and Abdul Kalam   won and became the President of India. The following are the number of voted received by the  2 contestants:

  • Abdul Kalam – Independent-922,884
  • Lakshmi Sahgal-  CPI(M)-107,366

The Thirteenth Presidential Election was conducted in 2007.  2 persons contested and Ms.Pratibha Patil   won and became the President of India. The following are the number of voted received by the  2

The Fourteenth Presidential Elections in India is conducted in the year 2012. The following are the 2 contestants:

  • Pranabh Mukherjee (Indian Union Finance Minister)- Indian National Congress/UPA   and
  • P.A.Sangma (Former Lokh Sabha Speaker)- Independent

The Total Value of Votes by the elected M.P.’s  of both the Houses of the Parliament of India (Rajya Sabha and the Lokh Sabha)& the elected M.L.A.’s of the States are 10 98 882.

For winning the election 50% of the total value of votes – 5 49 441 are to be received.
