A State-wise List of Popular ‘Zoos’-Approved By the ‘Central Zoo Authority of India’/CZA

In India there are many “Zoos”, mini-zoos, circuses, rescue centers for animals and birds  wherein animals, birds and reptiles are kept and the zoos are maintained  for the following purposes :

  • for exhibition to the public, 
  • for wildlife conservation and 
  • for environmental education.

In view of a fast and uncontrolled growth of zoos, circuses etc. dealing with animals, birds and reptiles in India, a body of the Union Government of India was formed in the year 1992 to control and regulate zoos etc. in India, with the name “Central Zoo Authority of India” /CZA

as an  affiliate member of the “World Association of Zoos and Aquariums”/WAZA,

The Central Zoo Authority of India/CZA has got powers and duties for the following functions:

  • To oversee the functioning and the development of zoos in India,
  • To  evaluate and asses the functioning of every zoo with reference to prescribed norms and standards and to grant recognition to such zoos which can come up to the prescribed norms and standards within a reasonable time,
  • To regulate acquisition of animals by zoos keeping in view the overall interest of conservation,
  • To upgrade technical skills of zoo personnel on various aspects of zoo management,
  • To encourage research with regard to captive breeding and zoo education programmes,
  • To identify endangered species of wild animals for the purpose of captive breeding and oversee their execution including maintenance of appropriate records and
  • To provide technical and financial assistance to zoos for their development and management on scientific line.
As of 01st December 2013, out of total of 510 zoos which applied for recognition, only 195 zoos have been recognized and 315 zoos have been De-recognized/ recognition cancelled by CZA, based on the eligibility criteria laid down by the CZA.
