The Following is a List of Presidents of India Since 1950 Till Date:
The 1st / First President of India:
DR. RAJENDRA PRASAD (1884-1963) – From 26th January 1950 To To 13th May 1962- Consecutivelly for 2 Terms
India became a “Republic Country” on 26th January 1950, after becoming Independent on 15th August 1947.
Dr. Rajendra Prasad took charge as the President of Independent and Republic India on 26th January 1950, being selected by the Committee of Indian Constitution.
However, the First General Elections and the First Presidential Election were held in the year 1952, after completion of all formalities for the complete implementation of the Constitution of India as a “Republic” country.
Dr.Rajendra Prasad was the first President of India from 26th January 1950 to 12th May 1962, for two consecutive terms.
In the Presidential election in the year 1962, Dr.Rajendra Prasad expressed his decision to retire from public life and declined the offer to continue as the d President of India for a third term.
Dr.Rajendra Prasad was conferred on with India’s highest civilian award the ‘Bharat Ratna’ in the year 1962.
Dr.Rajendra Prasad was born in Jiradei, in the Siwan district of Bihar on 3rd December 1884 and he died in Patna, Bihar on 28th February 1963.
The 2nd /Second President of India:
DR.SARVAPALLE RADHAKRISHNAN / DR.S.RADHAKRISHNAN (1888-1975)- From 13th May 1962 To 13th May 1967
Dr.S.Radhakrishnan had been the First Vice President of India from 1952 to 1962, consecutively for 2 terms.
Dr.Radhakrishnan was was born on 5th September 1888 at Tiruthani, near Chennai, Tamilnadu and he died on 17th April 1975 at he age of 86 years.
According to his wish, his birthday the 5th Sepetember is celebrated as the “Teachers’Day” in India.
Dr.S.Radhakrishnan was conferred on with India’s highest civilian award, the ‘Bharat Ratna’ in the year 1954.
The 3rd /Third President of India:
DR.ZAKIR HUSSAIN (1897-1969) – From 13th May 1967 to 3rd May 1969
Dr. Zakir Hussain was the first Muslim to be the President of India.
Dr.Zakir Hussain was born at Hyderabad on 8th February 1897 and died on 3rd May 1969, during his tenure at the age of 72 years.
Dr.Zahir Hussain was conferred on with India’s highest civilian award the ‘Bharat Ratna’ in the year 1963.
The 1st/First Temporary President of India:
Mr.VARAHAGIRI VENKATA GIRI / V.V.GIRI – From 3rd May 1969 To 20th July 1969, for a period of 2 months and 17 days.
After the death of the President of India, Dr.Zakir Hussain, V.V.Giri, who had been the Vice President of India from the year 1967 was appointed as the Temporary President of India from 3rd May 1969.
However, Mr.V.V.Giri resigned from the post of Temporary President of India on 21st August 1969 as he contested for the post of President of India.
Mr.V.V.Giri became the 4th / Fourth President of India from 24th Augist 1969 to 24th August 1974.
The 2nd / Second Temporary President of India:
JUSTICE MOHD. HIDAYATULLAH (1905-1992)- From 20th July 1969 to 21st August 1969
Justice Mohd. Hidayatullah was the second ‘Acting President of India’, succeeding Dr.V.V.Giri, from 20th July 1969 to 21st August 1969, for a period of 1 month, subsequent to the death of the 4th President of India, Dr.Zakir Hussain, from 20th Jully 1969 to 21st August 1969.
Justice Hidayatullah had been the Chief Justice of India from 1968 to 1970.
Justice Hidayatullah had been the 6th Vice President of India from31st August 1979 to 31st August 1984.
Justice Hidayatullah was born on 17th December 1905 and he died on 18th September 1992 at the age of 86 years.
The 4th / Fourth President of India:
DR.VARAHAGIRI VENKATA GIRI /DR.V.V.GIRI ( 1894-1980) – From 24th August 1969 to 23rd August 1974
Dr.V.V.Giri was conferred on with India’s highest civilian award the ‘Bharat Ratna’ in the year 1975.
Dr.V.V.Giri was born at Berhampore in Odisha on 10th August 1894 and died on 23rd June1980 Chennai, Tamilnadu at the age of 85 years.
The 5th /Fifth President of India:
DR.FAKRUDEEN ALI AHMED (1905-1977)- From 24th August 1974 to 11th February 1977-
Dr.Fakhrudeen Ali Ahmed was the ‘Second Muslim’ to be the President of India.
Dr.Fakrudeen Ali Ahmed was born in Old Delhi in Punjab of the British Province on 13th May 1905 and died in New Delhi on 11th February 1977 during his tenure as the President of India at the age of 71 years.
The 3rd /Third Temporary President of India:
MR.BASAPPA DANAPPA JATTI/ MR.B.D.JATTI ( 1913-2002)- from 11th February 1977 to 25th July 1977-
Mr.B.D.Jatti was the third ‘Temporary President of India’, from 11th February 1977 to 24th July 1977, subsequent to the death of the 5th President of India, Dr.Fakrudeen Ali Ahmed, till the 6th President of India Mr.Neelam Sanjeeva Reddy took charge.
Mr.B.D.Jatti was born in Savalgi, Bombay Presidncy on 10th September 1913 and he died in on 8th June 2002 at the age of 88 years.
The 6th /Sixth President of India:
MR.NEELAM SANJEEVA REDDY- 1913-1993)- from 25th July 1977 to 24th July 1982.
Mr.Neelam Sanjeeva Reddy (1913-1996)
Mr. Neelam Sanjeeva Reddy was born in Anantpur District, Andhraprashesh, on 19th May 1913 and he died in Bangalore on 1st June 1996 at the age of 83 years.
The 7th /Seventh President of India:
GIANI ZAIL SINGH (1916-1994)- from 25th July 1982 to 24th July 1987
Giani Zail Singh was born in a village at Faridkot, Punjab on 5th May 1916 and he died in Chandigarh, Punjab on 25th December 1994.
The 8th /Eighth President of India:
DR.R.VENKATARAMAN (1910-2009)- from 25th July 1987 to 24th July 1992
Dr.R.Venkataraman was born in Thanjavur, Tamilnadu on 4th December 1910 and died in New Delhi on 27th January 2009 at the age of 98 years.
The 9th /Ninth President of India:
DR.SHANKER DAYLA SHARMA (1918-1999)-from 25th July 1992 to 24th July 1997
Dr.Shanker Dayal Sharma was born in Bhopal on 19th August 1918 and died in New Delhi on 26th December 1999 at the age of 81 years.
The 10th /Tenth President of India:
DR.KOCHERIL RAMAN NARAYANAN / DR.K.R.NARAYANAN – from 25th July 1997 to 24th July 2002
Dr.K.R.Narayanan is the first and the only person from a “Dalit” Community to occupy the highest office in India.
Dr.K.R.Narayanan was born in Kottayam District, Kerala on 27th October 1920 and died in New Delhi on 9th November 2005.
The 11th /Eleventh President of India:
DR.AVUL PAKIR JAINULABUDEEN ABDUL KALAM/A.P.J.ABDUL KALAM- from 25th July 2002 to 24th July 2007-
Dr.A.P.J.Abdul Kalam was born in Rameswaram, Tamilnadu on 15th October 1931 and died in Shillong, Meghalaya on 27th July 2015 at age of 83 years, while he had been delivering a lecture to the students of Indian Institute of Management / IIM Shillong.
It is notable that Dr.A.P.J.Abdul Kalam is the only ‘Non-Political’ President of India, unanimously accepted by all the political parties of India
Dr.A.P.J.Abdul Kalam had declined the offers/ suggestions to contest in the 12th and the 13th Presidential Elections, as he was not willing to contest for the prestigious post of the President of India and he was however willing to serve as the ‘First Citizen of India’ as and if had been elected unanimously.
Dr.A.P.J.Abdul Kalam was conferred on with India’s highest civilian award the ‘Bharat Ratna’ in the year 1997.
Dr.A.P.J.Abdul Kalam expired on 27th July 2015, while he was giving a lecture to the students at Rajiv Gandhai Institute of Management (IIM, Shillong) (Shilong- the Capital of Meghalaya)
The 12th /Twelfth President of India:
MRS.PRATHIBA DEV SINGH PATIL -(Born on 19th December 1934- aged 81 years) – from 25th July 2007 to 24th July 2012
Mrs.Prathiba Dev Singh Patil /Mrs.Prathiba Patilwas the Thirteenth President of India (The Twelfth Person ) from 25th July 2007 to 24th July 2012.
Mrs.Pratibha Patil is the first and the only ‘Lady President of India’, till date.
Mrs.Pratibah Patil was born in Nadgaon , Maharashtra on 19th December 1934.
The Present and The 13h /Thirteenth President of India:
MR.PRANAB MUKHERJEE- from 25th July 2012 till Date
