In a period of less than 7 months, Pranab Mukherjee, has so far disposed of the following 8 “Mercy Petitions” of death row convicts in 5 cases as detailed below:
The first mercy petition disposed of by the present President of India was the first and the only case in which a death penalty has been commuted to “Life Imprisonment” in the following case-
In the case of Murder of Step-Mother, Step-Brother and Step-Sister over Properties- Issues – by-
- Atbir of Delhi-
The Mercy Petition was Accepted by the President on 15th November 2012 and the death penalty was commuted to “Life imprisonment”.
In the Case of 26/11/2004- Mumbai Terror Attacks:
- Mohammed Ajmal Amir Kasab-
The Mercy Petition was Rejected by the President on 5th November 2012 and Kasab was hanged on 21st November 2012
In the Case of 2001-Parliament of India Attack Case-
- Afzal Guru-
The Mercy Petition was Rejected by the President on 3rd February 2013 and Afzal Guru was hanged on 9th February 2013.
In the Case of Killing 2 wives and a daughter Cases-
- Saibanna Ningappa Natikar of Karnataka-The Mercy Petition has been rejected by the President on 4th January 2013 – Execution Pending
In the Case of Killing 22 police personnel in 1993 (Associates of Sandalwood King-Veerappan of Karnataka):
- Gnanaprakash
- Simon
- ‘Meesai’ Madaian and
- Pilavendran.
