List of Prime Ministers of India From 1947 Till Date

In India, the PRESIDENT is the head of the state, whereas, the executive powers are vested with the PRIME MINISTER and his Cabinet of Ministers.  From 1947 Till Date, a total number of 15 persons had held the most powerful and the vital post in India, from Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the First Prime Minister of India till Mr. Narendra Damodardass Modi / Narendra Modi, the present and the 14 th Prime Minister of India, including Mr. Gulzarilal Nanda, who had been the Interim Prime Minister of India, for short durations on 2 different occasions.

  1. PANDIT JAWAHARLAL NEHRU (1889-1964)

    Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru

Jawaharlal Nehru had been the First Prime Minister of India, from 15th August 1947 to 27th May 1964, continuously for a total duration of  16 years, 9 months and 12 days  consecutively and he is the first and the only person to have held the post for the longest / continuous duration for 3 Full Terms & part of the 4th Term as detailed below:

  • 1st Term: From 1947 to 1952 as the SELECTED Prime Minister of the ‘Constituent Assembly of India’
  • 2nd Term: From 1952 to 1957 as the ELECTED Prime Minister of India in the First Lok Sabha,
  • 3rd Term: From 1957 to 1962 as the ELECTED Prime Minister of India in the Second Lok Sabha,
  • 4th Term: From 1962 to 1964 as the ELECTED Prime Minister of India in the Third Lok Sabha, with the next elections due in 1967).

Jawaharlal Nehru was born on 14th November 1889 at Allahabad in Uttar Pradesh, in a rich Nehru family. In 1912, he was graduated in Natural Sciences and Law in England.  After returning from England, he joined the Indian National Congress (INC) and actively participated in and was one of the leaders of  the Non Co operation Movements of the INC, for getting Independence from the British rule. He became the President of INC in 1929. In 1947 he was selected as the  First Prime Minister of Indian Dominion, and subsequently he was elected as the Prime Minister of India (of the INC) in the 1952, 1957 & 1962 elections.

Jawaharlal Nehru died on 27th May 1964, at the age of 74 years, in New Delhi during his tenure as Prime Minister of India. In 1955 he was conferred on with the Bharat Ratna Award, the first highest Civilian Award  of India. As he had been very fond of children  and was called ‘Chacha Nehru’ (Nehru Uncle), his birthday, the 14th November is being celebrated as the ‘Children’s Day’ in India, from 1964.after his death.

GULZARILAL NANDA

Gulzarilal Nanda was the First Interim Prime Minister of India, from 27th May 1964 to 9th June 1964, for 14 days, after the death of Jawaharlal Nehru, the First Prime Minister of India during his tenure, until Dr. Lal Bahadur Shastri took over as the Second Prime Minister of India. He  was also the Second Interim Prime Minister of India, from 11th January 1966 to 24th January 1966, for 14 days,  after the death of Dr.Lal Bahadur Shastri in Tashkent Russia / USSR on 11th January 1966, during his tenure as Prime Minister, until Mrs. Indira Gandhi took over as the Third Prime Minister of India.

Gulzarilal Nanda was born on 4th July 1898, at Sialkot in Punjab of British India (Now in Punjab of Pakistan). He studied in Lahore, Amritsar, Agra and Allahabad. He had been a Research Scholar on Labour Problems in the Allahabad University. In 1921 he became a Professor of Economics at the National College in Bombay (Mumbai) in 1921. He had actively participated in the Non Co-operation Movement initiated by the Indian National Congress (INC). He had been holding various  posts, from MLA to Union Home Minister  in the British & Independent and Republic India from 1937 till 1971.He was conferred on with India’s highest civilian award the ‘Bharat Ratna’ in 1997. He died on 15th January 1998 at the age of 99 years, at Ahmedabad in Gujarath.

2. LAL BAHADUR SHASTRI

Lal Bahadur Shastri was the Second Prime Minister of India from 9th June 1964 to 11th January 1966, for duration of 1 year, 7 months and 2 days, until his death.

Lal Bahadur Shastri was born as Lal Bahadur Srivastava, on 2nd October 1904 at Mughalsarai in the United Provinces of Agra & Oudh in British India (now in Uttar Pradesh), in a ‘Kayastha’ family, with a surname: Srivastava. He studied in the East Central Railway Inter College & Harish Chandra Government High School, in Mughalsarai, He got graduated in Philosophy & Ethics (Degree  named Shastri). Thereafter Lal Bahadur Srivatsava was known as Lal Bahadur Shastri, as he already dropped his family – caste based surname : Srivastava, during his High School studies. He actively participated in the Indian Independent Movement and became a close disciple of Mahatma Gandhi & Jawaharlal Nehru. From 1952 he had been holding various key posts in Nehruji’s first cabinet, In 1964, after the death of Nehruji, he became the Second Prime Minister of India. He died at Tashkent in Uzbek SSR, USSR (Now in USSR) on 11th January 1966 on the same night of his signing the Tashket Declaration between India and Pakistan, on behalf of India.

In 1966, Lal Bahadur Shastri was posthumously awarded India’s first highest Civilian Award the : ‘Bharat Ratna’.

3. MRS. INDIRA GANDHI

Indira Gandhi was the Third Prime Minister of India, in the following 2 phases:

  • From 24th January 1966 to 24th March 1977, for a period of 10 years and 2 months, succeeding Dr.Lal Bahadur Shastri and

(From 24th March 1977 to 28th July 1979, for a period of 2 years,  4 months and 4 days, Mr.Morarji Desai was the Fourth Prime Minister of India)

  • From 14th January 1980 to 31st October 1984, for a period of 4 years, 9 months and 17 days,succeeding Dr.Charan Singh until her death on 31st October 1984, being shot down by her own Security Guards, during her tenure as the Prime Minister of India.

(Indira Gandhi had been the Prime Minister of India, for a total duration of 14 years, 11 months and 17 days and became the second longest serving Prime Minister of India. Also she has been the first and the only Lady Prime Minister of India. )

She was the Second longest serving Prime Minister of India, though in 2 different phases, after only her own father and the first Prime Minister of India Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, who had been the first longest serving Prime Minister for a duration of 16  years, 9 months and 12 days, consecutively, from 15th August 1947 to 27th May 1964. Also, Mrs. Indira Gandhi is the first and the only ‘Lady Prime Minister of India’

Indira Gandhi was born as Indira Nehru in a Kasmiri Pandit Family on 19th November 1917 at  Allahabad  in the United Provinces of British India (now in Uttar Pradesh), as the only child of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, one of the India’s Freedom Fighters and one of the makers of the Independent & Republic India and the First Prime Minister of India. She studied in many schools, including St Cecilia’s in Allahabad and Ecole International Scool in Geneva and in the Viswa Bharathi in Shantiniketan. In 1942, she got married to Mr.Feroz Gandhi and thereafter she had been known as Mrs Indira Gandhi. When her father was the Prime Minister of India, she had been unofficially working as his Personal Secretary. In 1959 she became the President of the Indian National Congress (INC). In 1966, after the death of Lal Bahadur Shastri, she became the Third Prime Minister of India. On 31st October 1984, she was shot dead, by 2 of her own Security Guards, in vengeance to the Operation Blue Cross, ordered by her, in which the sacred Amritsar Golden Temple was damaged in firing by Indian Military Forces against the Sikh Militants who were hiding in the temple complex. In 1971, she was posthumously conferred on with India’s first highest civilian award the ‘Bharat Ratna’

4. MR.MORARJI DESAI

Morarji Desai

Morarji Desai was the Fourth Prime Minister of India, from 24th March 1977 to 28th July 1979, for 2 years and 4 months. He was the of First Non-Congress Prime Minister India.

Morarji Desai was born at Bhadeli Village in Bulsar District of Bombay Presidency, British India (Now Valsad District  in Gujarat) on 29th February 1896. He studied in the Saurashtra The Kundla School, Savarkundla (Now called the J.V.Modi School) and Bai Ava Bai High School in Bulsar (Valsad). He got graduated from Wilson College, Bombay (Now Mumbai).

By 1925 he joined the Indian Civil Services in Gujarat and in May 1930, he resigned as the Deputy Collector of Godhra, after the Nagpur Riots of 1927-28, in which he was found guilty by the British Rulers, as he accused of being in support of the Hindus in the riots. In 1934 & 1937 he became the Revenue Minister & the Home Minister in the Bombay Presidency and in 1952 he became the Chief Minister of Bombay State. From March 1958 to August 1964, he had been the Union Finance Minister in Jawaharlal Nehru’s Cabinet. From March 1967 to July 1969 he was the Union Finance Minister in Indira Gandhi’s cabinet, and he resigned the post in August 1969.

In 1969, when the Indian National Congress (INC) had split into two factions: 1.Ruling /  Indicate Congress (Indira Congress) &  2. Organization / Syndicate Congress, he joined the Syndicate Congress.  In 1977 he was elected as the leader of the Janata Allance and the Janata Party and  became the first Non Congress Prime Minister of India, in the Janata Alliance / Janata Party. In 979, Raj Narain & Charan Singh of Janata Party and Madhu limaye,, Krishan Kant and George Fernandez of other parties in the Janata Alliance, accused him of allowing / not taking action against some of the members of Janata Party, who were having dual membership in Janata Party and the Jan Sangh (the parent party of the Rashtriya Swayamseva Sangh / RSS), So, he resigned from the post of Prime Minister of India  in July 1979 and he retired from active Politics. After retirement he lived in Mumbai. He died on 10th April 1995, at the age of 99 years.

Morarji Desai was conferred on with ‘Nishan-e-Pakistan’, Pakistan’s highest Civilian Award in 1990 (he was the only one Indian to be conferred on with ‘Nishan-e-Pakistan’) and the ‘Bharat Ratna’, India’s ,the first highest Civilian Award in 1991, despite the fact that Desai stopped the ‘Bharat Ratna Award’ during his tenure as the Prime Minister of India, between 1977 and 1980, as he opined that the awards were the products of the Thinking & the Legacy of the British.

5. CHAUDHARY CHARAN SINGH / Mr.CHARAN SINGH

Chaudhary Charan Singh was the Fifth Prime Minister of India from 28th July 1979 to 14th January 1980 for 5 months and 15 days.

Charan Singh was born on 23rd December 1902 at Noorpur in Hapur District (Now Meerut)  of Uttar Pradesh in a Jat family, whose ancestor Raja Nahar Singh of Ballabhgarh of Greater Punjab ( Now Haryana)  was a leader of Indian Rebellions of 1857, who was sent to prisons. His followers and family descendents migrated to Bulandhaher in Uttar Pradesh. In 1925, he  got Post Graduated in  Arts and in 1926 he got graduated in Law from Agra College in Agra affiliated to  Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar University, Agra. In 1928, he had been practising as a civil lawyer in Ghaziabad.

From 1931, Charan Singh actively participated in the Indian Independence Movement and was imprisoned by the British Rulers on 2 occasions. In 1937, he was elected as a member of the Legislative Assembly of the United Provinces. He was interested in the laws which were detrimental to the Indian farmers and the Indian village economy and he started to oppose the exploitation of the Indian farmers by the landlords. He had been a notable INC leader of Uttar Pradesh from 1952 to 1967. However, he joined the opposition party, the Bharatiya Lok Dal, leaving INC and he became the first Non Congress Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh.

After the resignation of Morarji Desai, he became the Fifth Prime Minister of India in July 1979 from the Janata Party (Secular). He resigned as the Prime Minister of India in January 1980, subsequent to the withdrawal of support by the Indira Gandhi Congress party. After resignation, he had been the Leader of the Lok Dal Party till his death. He died on 29th May 1987 at the age of 84 years at New Delhi.

MRS. INDIRA GANDHI (Second Time):After the resignation of Charan Singh, Mrs Indira Gandhi was the Prime Minister of India from 14th January 1980 to 31st October 1984, for the second time . She  was shot dead on 31st October 1984,  by her own Security Guards in her official residence.

6. Mr.RAJIV GANDHI,

Rajiv Gandhi

Rajiv Gandhi was the Sixth Prime Minister of India, from 31st October 1984 to 1st December 1989 for duration of 5 years and 1 month.

Rajiv Gandhi was born, as Rajiv Ratna Gandhi, on 20th August 1944 to Mrs. Indira Gandhi and Mr. Feroze Gandhi, at Bombay in Bombay Presidency of British India (Now in Mumbai, Maharashtra). He studied in Shiv Niketan School, Welham’s Boys’ School and Doon School in Dehradun of Uttar Khand. He studied Engineering in Trinity College, Cambridge, and London for 3 years from 1962 to 1965 and discontinued it and in 1966 he joined a Mechanical Engineering Course at the Imperial College, London and he could not complete that course also. In 1966, he returned to India and joined the Flying Club and got trained as a Pilot and in 1970 he joined the Air India as a Pilot. He was not interested in Politics while his younger brother Sanjay Gandhi was interested in Politics. However, after the sudden death Sanjay Gandhi in a plane crash, in June 1980, Shankaracharya- Swami Shri Swaroopanand from Badrinath advised him not to continue as a Pilot and asked him to join Politics and do his best to the nation. Subsequently in February 1981 he entered Politics, while continuing as a Pilot in Air India. In August 1981, he became an elected Member of Parliament (Lok Sabha) in August 1981 from Amethi Constituency.

After the assassination of his mother Indira Gandhi in October 1984, he became the Sixth  Prime Minister of India, at the age of 41 years and he  has become the youngest Prime Minister of India, from 1947 till date. On 21st May 1991, he was assassinated by a human bomb blast at Sriperumpudur, in Tamil Nadu, when he had come to attend a public election campaign meeting. The Liberation Tiger of Tamil Ealam (LTTE) militants had conspired and assassinated him, in vengeance to his attitude and actions against them, in sending a Peace Keeping Force to curtail their militant activities against the Srilankan Government.

From 1992 onwards the 21st May, the assassination day of Rajiv Gandhi has been declared as Anti-Terrorism Day in India. Many Government Projects, Schemes, Stadiums, Airports, Educational Institutes, Universities and  Technology Centres were named after him. He  was conferred on with India’s highest civilian award, the Bharar Ratna, posthumously  in  1991.

7. Mr.VISWANATH PRATAPH SINGH / V.P.SINGH

V.P.Singh

V.P.Singh had been the Seventh Prime Minister of India,   from 2nd December 1989 to  10th November 1990,  for 11 months.

(Born in Allahbad on 25th June 1931 and died on 27th November 2008 at the age of 77 years)

Mr.V.P.Singh was the head of the Janata Dal Government.

Mr.V.P.Singh succeeded Mr.Rajiv Gandhi and was succeeded by Mr.Chandra Shekar as the Prime Minister of India

 

8. MR.CHANDRA SHEKARchandra-sekhar

Chandra shekar was the Eighth Prime Minister of India, from 10th November 1990 to 21st June 1991,  for 7 months. He was born in Ibrahimpatti village in Ballia District in Uttar Pradesh on 1st July 1927 and died in New Delhi on 8th July 2007 at the age of 80 years.

Mr.Chandra shekar succeeded Mr.V.P.Singh and was succeeded by Mr.P.V.Narasimha Rao as the Prime Minister of India.

9. MR.PAMULAPARTI VENKATA NARASIMHA RAOP.V.NARASIHMA RAO

P.V.Narasimha Rao wa the Ninth rime Minister of India , from 21st June 1991 to 16th May 1996,  for 4 years and 11 months.

(Born in  Lakkampalli village of Narasampet in Warangal District.of Andhra Pradesh on 28th June 1921 and died in New Delhi on 23rd December 2004 at the age of 83 years)

 

Mr.P.V.Narasimha Rao is the first South Indian / the first from the State of Andhra Pradesh to become the Prime Minister of India.

Mr.P.V.Narasimha Rao succeeded Mr.Chandra Shekar and was succeeded by Mr.A.B.Vajpayee as the Prime MInister of India.

 

10. MR. ATAL BIHARI VAJPAYEE / A.B.VAJPAYEE:

A.B.Vajpayee

A.B.Vajpaye was the 10th Prime Minister of India,in the following 3 terms:

1st Term:From 16th May 1996 To  1st June 1996 for 17 days as the Pime Minister of the Bharahiya Janata Party /BJP  and a

2nd Term: From 19th March 1998 to 13th October 1999  for a period of  1 year, 6 months and 24 days as the Prime Mininster of a BJP led National Democratic Alliance /NDA   and a

3rd Term: From 13th October 1999 to 22nd May 2004 for a period of 4 years 7 months and 9 days as the Prime Minister of the Bharathiya Janatha Party/ BJP led National Democratic Alliance/NDA

Vajpayee was born on 25th December 1924 at  Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh and he die on 5th December 1924- aged 91 years as of 25th December 2015.

Mr.A.B.Vajpayee had been the Prime Minister of India as the only Non -Congress Prime Minister who had completed a full 5 years term and he had been the Prime Minister of India for a  total period of 6 years 2 months and 20 days (Non Consecutively)

Mr.A.B.Vajpayee succeeded Mr.P.V.Narasimha Rao and was succeeded by Mr.H.D.Devegowda in the first term of his office of a short tenure of 17 days

and he succeeded Mr.I.K.Gural in his 2nd term of office and he continued in office for a third term until he  was succeeded by Dr.Manmohan Singh as the Prime Minister of India.

Mr.A.B.Vajpayee was conferred on with the highest civilian award of India, the Bharat Ratna in the year 2015

 

11. MR.HARADANAHALLI DODDE GOWDA DEVE GOWDA / H.D.DEVE GOWDA:

H.D.Deve Gowda

H.D.Dev Gowda was  the Eleventh Prime Minister of India from from 1st June 1996 To 21st April 1997.for a period of 10 months and 20 days.He was born on 18th May 1933 at  Haradanahalli village in  Holenarasipura taluk of , Hassan District of  Karnataka. He is 84 years old as of  18th May 2017.

Deve Gowda was the Prime Minister heading  a ‘non-congress’ and non-BJP’ collision -“United Front”.

 

12. DR. INDER KUMAR GUJRAL / Dr.I.K.GUJRAL

I.K.Gujral

Dr.I.KGujral was the Twelfth Prime Minister of India from from 21st April 1997 To 19th March 1998 for 11 months. he was born on 4th December 1919,in Jhelum, the Undivided Punjab, which is presently in Pakistan. He died in Gurgaon, Haryana on 30th November 2012 at the age of 92 years.

as the Prime Minister of the Janata Dal Government.

From 19th March 1998 To 22nd May 2004:

MR. ATAL BIHARI VAJPAYEE / A.B VAJPAYEE 

Vajpayee  was the Prime Minister of India  for  the second and the third time, From 19th March 1998 To 13th October 1999 and From 13th October 1999 To 22nd May 2004.

13. DR. MANMOHAN SINGH

Dr.Manmohan Singh Prime Minister of India

Manmohan Singh was the 14th Prime Minister of India, from 22nd May 2004 to 26th May 2014, for two complete & consecutive terms for 10 years.

He was the Prime Minister of the Indian National Congress/ INC led United Progressive Alliane/ UPA.(Born in  Gah, Punjab on 26th Sepetmber 1932-aged 83 years as on 26th Septmeber 2015)

Dr.Manmohan Singh had been the 13th &the 14th  Prime Minister of India from 22nd May 2004 till 26th May 2014, for a continuous and full 2 terms of 10 years as the Prime Minister of the Indian National Congress/ INC led United Progressive Alliane/ UPA.

14. MR. NARENDRA DAMODHAR DASS MODI / NARENDRA MODI

Narendra Modi is the Fourteenth and the present Prime Minister of India, from 26th May 2014 till date. He was born on 17th September 1950 and he is 67 years old as on 17th September 2017.

 

Mr.Narendra Modi has taken charge as the Prime Minister of India from 26th May 2014, as the Prime Minister of the Bharathiya Janata Party/BJP led National Democratic Alliance/ NDA.Mr.Narendr Modi had been the Chief Minister of Gujarath from  2001 to 2014.
